What is Gout? Facts and Information on Gout

A type of Arthritis, Gout is a condition that results from excess accumulation of Uric Acid in the body.

Uric Acid is a component that is produced when the body breaks down "Purines" present in our tissues and food items. Uric Acid is formed naturally and being a waste product, it is usually flushed from the body by the kidneys through urine.

However, when the body fails to flush out the right amount of Uric Acid or produces it in excess than it is normal, it starts to transform in crystals, as they have nowhere else to go. These crystals get deposited in the various parts of the body, especially around the joints.

These needle-like crystals cause terrible pain, swelling and tenderness in the area. This particular condition is termed as Hyperuricemia that in some cases leads to Gout attacks.

Most of the time, Gout affects the big toe. However, it is also seen in places like knee, foot, ankle, wrist, fingers, elbow and hand.

If you or your family member is suffering from gout attacks with throbbing pain, reddishness and swelling in the big toe or any other joint, try Naturo Gout Care - a holistic remedy to ease your pains, promote healthy joints and flush your body of the toxins.

In other cases, some patients are known to complain of Gout in areas just under the skin, kidneys, urinary tract, or other soft and sensitive tissues.

A single Gout attack can cause severe burning pain, stiffness, and inflammation in a joint. Unless treated, these attacks will keep on happening over and over again. With time, they will harm the bones, tendons and other tissues.

How Does Gout Attack?

An acute Gout attack, or flare-up, starts with sudden, severe pain, heat and swelling in the large joint of the big toe. Gout, or Gouty Arthritis, is a complex disorder of which a person is usually unaware...until he has an attack.

Gout attacks suddenly and without warning, often in the evening at bedtime or in the middle of the night. The big toe tends to appear slightly tender or a bit swollen at bedtime, but in the middle of the night, a Gouty toe can wake you with searing pain. The large joint at the base of the toe is not just bulbous and red, but is extremely painful to touch.

At least 90% of people with Gout have reported at least one flare-up in the big toe.

Although this seems like an Arthritis flare, it is followed by swelling and heat in the joint that is accompanied by extreme pain. This complex symptom is called Podagra.

The pain and swelling can continue for 3 to 10 days. Occasionally, an initial acute attack will last up to 3 – 4 weeks. The toe will continue to be hot during this time and you may even run a low-grade fever.

However, after this painful period of 3 days, this attack disappears and might not occur for another interval – a week, month, or even years. But with time, the Gout attacks become more severe in nature, more frequent and persist longer than the previous attacks.

Usually, the Gout attacks are diagnosed by taking sample fluids from the affected joints. Your doctor might also ask you to take Uric Acid level measurement tests

What is PseudoGout

PseudoGout, like Gout, typically develops in one joint and the onset is sudden and intense. However, PseudoGout most often develops in the knee while Gout develops in the big toe 90% of the time.

PseudoGout is caused by the accumulation of Calcium Pyrophosphate crystals in the joint and tissues around the joint. Diagnosis using a joint fluid examination will show the difference.

Treatment of PseudoGout is similar to the treatment of Gout. PseudoGout can be treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAID) for pain or Cortisone shots to the joint for relief from inflammation and pain.

Long-term treatment is accomplished with low-dose Colchicine therapy.

Diet does not affect PseudoGout positively or negatively. And there is little evidence of PseudoGout in families.
